Jimmy Blackmon's Hackberry is September's Self BOM
« on: October 05, 2008, 03:48:47 pm »
Congratulations to Jimmy Blackmon of Clarksville, Tennessee
His Meat-Getting Hackberry "Hammer"
is Self Bow of the Month for September
Here's How Jimmy Made This Bow:
The tip overlays are Burmese Red Wood.   I coated the bow in Red Mahogany stain then sanded it until the stain was still in the
grain then coated it in a tung oil / Linseed oil mix and finished with Tru-oil. It is a pyramid but once I finished it I increased the
taper at the end of the limbs.  I took the nocks down even more this morning so they are thin but note as much as some I've seen.
It was a straight pyramid to begin with and the tips were laid out 1/2" but now the nocks are 3/8" right in the middle.  It's 1.5" at the fades. It's 61" nock to nock and pulls 50# @ 27"
Praise for this bow is very deserved:
"Congratulations on a beautiful bow." George Tsoukalas
"Fine lookin weapon Ranger! Looks  likie it all came together for ya - Got a hackberry to cut down soon, hopefully can do it
justice ." -cowboy
"my first thought after just seeing the full draw pic was"now thats a nice bow",honest just ask my wife she heard me.
i really like the looks and tiller of that one, nice job" -sailordad
"Sweet looking bow Jimmy. I really like the look of a white wood bow."  -Justin Snyder

Thanks everyone.  This bow has turned out to be one of those that you just like everything about it.  In fact it's the first I've made that doesn't have a wart of some kind to me.  I seem to always find a little something that I'd like to change on my bows, but not in this one.  If you are thinking about hackberry then give it a try.  It's incredibly light yet it shoots wonderfully.  Again, thanks for all the compliments.

Congratulations Jimmy on a well deserved win! I've seen that bow in action and it sends an arrow down range with authority! Already proven as a good hunting bow in the right hands!  ;)

Congratulations Jimmy, It is truly a beautiful bow and we know it works well since it has taken a deer now also. Justin
