As explained earlier in thread here is 58" Ipe, sinewed backed, fishskin decorated bow with hemp string , if this new fangled photobucket thingy works. Draws 50lb at 28" and has been shot about 2oo times with with virtually no stringfollow. Was the easiest bow I made as no handle built in, just shaped and tillered. Ipe is not easy to work as it's hard as the hobs of hell, but so strong.
Shooter G22 I would follow advice given though and start with something longer with easily seen grain structure like ash or elm, some kind of whitewood. Take it easy and learn as you go, it's not brain surgery but you certainly need experience to build on. You can always get more wood so use cheap stuff at first, better still cut your own. Mostly enjoy the journey, there's a lot of pleasure out of making bows in the primitive style. ( I don't think glass fibre belongs in primitive class, no need for it.) Have fun.

In the reply window, you will see a link below the text box that says "Additional Options" click on that, and a thingy pops up at the bottom that lets you browse for attachments. If you want to post more than one at a time, click "more attachments". They have to be 200 kb or less, and around 640x480 pixels or smaller.

I also agree that 58" REALLY short for a red oak bow at 28" draw. I would consider myself lucky to get a good shooter from osage at that length (or at least one that I would trust as a primary hunting weapon). As for hunting with a 68" bow, I do it all the time in some of the thickest woods on the planet. The eastern Indians hunted with long bows for a couple thousand years, as did the whole neolithic population of Europe. Unless you're like four feet tall, don't see how it would be a problem  A longer bow is more durable, usually smoother-drawing and more accurate. After you get some experience, you can start pushing the envelope on length and finding that fine line between high performance and firewood.
