wish I had my camera,, and a turkey pic
« on: September 20, 2008, 04:14:43 pm »
Rode to the country today to cut a poplar that had fallen across one of our paths and do a little scouting.
After I got the tree cut I decided I'd walk the road to the back of the property, which is only a hundred yards or so from where the tree was...so when I got to the property line I stopped for a second and what comes walking along from the other direction but a spike, maybe four point buck (I had left the camera in the truck.) Well I froze to see how close he'd come but he turned into the woods at the bottom of the hill. I thought he had turned his head looking away from me when I took a couple of steps but apparently not as he looked my direction and trotted away. Very excited about archery season starting in TWO weeks !!!

And then as I was leaving I spotted this out in the field...

 Lonely, looking little hen.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

not used to seeing toms and jakes with the hens this time of year, atleast around here its kinda unusual.

unless its just for a short time during the day when they are being social.

not a problem im a patient person, atleast i have learned to be since i started making bows ;)

those are jakes, not quit a year old, look at the tail feathers.
see how some are longer than the others, the longer ones have replaced the earlier growth feathers thru molting.
when they mature tha tail feathers are all the same length and their beards have grown in to about 4"-6" by then.

Yep, When i got my Rio, I was suprised how short the beards were for such a big bird. You could tell the cactus and thorns did a job on them.
