Preforms?
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:56:49 pm »
Are pre-cut obsidion preforms any good for learing to knap?  I was thinking about getting some off ebay to start learning this awesome artform/survival skill.
These preforms are 3/16" thick and cut 1 to 2.5" long

They are very good for learning pressure flaking and grinding a lenticuler edge and setting up platforms. You can fast track to making nice arrowheads but you should learn to smash rock also.

The 2 heads I got from Justin that I put on my cane hunting arrows were made from preforms I believe.Even I have made a few arrowheads from preforms. I still haven't smashed any rocks...but I have watched lots of other guys do it.  ;D

I sent Steve,"Cromm" some arrowheads that were slabbed. He said he was going to post pictures of his arrows. If he does, you will be able to see that it is hard to tell the difference except you can get FOG points very thin.
