Dano Sidewinder yes it is indeed hickory. Justin I used rit dye with about half as much water as the directions call for just kept brushing it on with an elcheapo brush.about six coats of rattle can spar and several coats of johnsons paste wax.R.C.
PS the wax is what really brought out the color of the dye.

  Good looking bow, Ronnie. Sure ain't nothing wrong with that one for a first time bow. I,ll bet with that pyramid style it shoots smooth as silk.

You'll enjoy that one Ronnie.  My wife and I shot a couple of Joe Higgin's Hickory pyramid bows at Knapadonia (Whidbey Island, Washington) last weekend.  The first time either of us had shot one.  He had a 37# for my wife and a 55# for me.  My wife wants one now, which tickles me to death as her current bow is a 25# fiberglass recurve.  I didn't think she would like shooting off the knuckle, but no problem.  And the nice thing about these is that they are ambidextrous, and I am a South Paw.
