The Trufulla Bow , My 7 year olds bow
« on: July 08, 2008, 04:29:26 pm »
My youngest son's favorite book is 'The Lorax' by Dr. Suess . So every time he sees me workin' on a bow he wants to 'cut on the truffula too Daddy.' So I made this bow for him .His birthday is Thursday. The truffula trees in the book are yellow and orange ,so I died this great piece of persimmon Bob sent me with olive oil with tumeric in it. Same tumeric added to the water to soak the sinew.

It started as a self bow but one of the pin knots on the back popped off ,revealing a black area beneath it. So I dug the black out ,and sinewed it.

Here are the boys havin' fun.

A few numbers . 47" tip to tip . Working sections of limbs 10" long each 1 1/2" wide near the handle and 1 1/4" right before it gets narrow and deep . The handle is 5" long counting the fades. He draws about 15" .

Thanks guys , he really is digging havin' his own bow.   I forgot to take an unstrung picture.

The upper limb has a lot of reflex and the lower has some defex . It averages out to 1 3/4" reflex just after unstringing.
It (the stave) put me in mind of the Andaman Island bows.

That's a cool bow and your son look's like he really enjoys it. I bet that was made from the log I carried out of the woods. I was younger that day than the old guy running the saw :P

That's a cool holmegaard...can you explain what an andaman is?  I've heard that word before but I don't know what it is.
