I've never tried one, but I've always wanted to. The Cherokee preferred bear gut over pretty much anything else for bowstrings.

In the Book ..... Bows & Arrows of the Native American....it talks about Deer Gut Bow String....and how to Reverse Twist them.....I have made Strings from Commercially bought Pig Gut...and they work as well as Sinew or Rawhide do....so Deer should be just fine....just make sure that you wash it really good inside and out....just like Chittlins!!!!

I washed mine really good inside and out with Dawn Detergent...then I cut them into long pieces and I just took a small weight and tied it to one end to keep them straight....nailed the other to my raftersin the Garage...and let them Air Dry...they shrink way up...from the size they are to about as thin as a pencil lead!!

You are welcome John....I think that they are almost as strong as Sinew....and a whole bunch easier to make too!!! Lot less pieces to mess with!!

Do you turn the gut inside out like my Granny use to before she stuffed them with sausage.
She would turn them inside out to be sure they was clean, nothing worse than get a piece of corn in your sausage.  ;D ;D ;D At least that is what she said.  :)
