44'' self bow 25'' draw
« on: July 03, 2008, 09:44:42 pm »
Mentioned this one a while back but couldn't get the pic up. Piggy back hickory 44'' long 1 1/2'' wide 35lbs at 20''. I threw it together just for practice and when the tiller still looked off (my fault for rushing it) I pulled it back to 25'' just to see what would happen. Considering how much wood isn't even working, this seems impossible. props to hickory.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

Boy I hear that Dano.  The string looks like it could pop off at any time, if the limbs don't explode first.  :o It looks cool, but I'm not drawing it that far.  ;D Justin

That hickory is some bendy stuff.  :o   A bit of sinew and more working near or through the handle and you will have a sweet little hunting bow.  Nice work Benjamin!  8)     Pat

I'm with Pat. I'd lay two thin layers of sinew and then one thick layer in the center. It would last forever and be indestructable.

I decided I have nothing to loose so I just heat treated the belly and put slight recurves in 6'' from the tips. It'll stay near the shower for a week and I hope to make a nice looking (symetrical) bow that pulls a bit more than 15lbs. That's about where it was at when I fixed the hinges. Any tips on how long to wait or where to go from here? I'd like to avoid sinew backing it.
