Gelatin based hide glue
« on: October 17, 2024, 09:04:48 pm »
hey All, I have been working on a small osage bow. 1220mm or 48 inches. I processed a stack of Roo tendons to back it and tried to make hide glue from a gelatin. So I followed what seemed to be standard procedure but it didn't set hard after a couple of days. So I've done something wrong.
Do I leave it and see?
Heat it up?
Pull it off?
Would the tendons be no good?
Cheers

I guess the main question is "what kind of gelatin" did you use? I have only use Knox gelatin from the grocery store which always set up with no problems.

As for reusing the sinew, I don't know, perhaps the gelatin will wash off of it in warm water.

Well, It was from the store. I don't think we get Knox in Oz.
I heated up a blob leftover yesterday, still soft.
It's been 3 days so I assume there should be some sign it's working by now.
I thought about trying to wash it off.
I still have some roo left but only for one layer.
Just have to try it I suppose.
Thanks

If it is animal gelatin then you should be able to wash it off with warm water and a little detergent. I have soaked sinew that was glued in Knox gelatin and once soften have washed it off.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

is that possible that you over heated it?

I could have overheated it I suppose. But it just washed off without any issues. I redid it with titebond.

Though, I was at the shops today and in the discount supermarket (Aldi, in Australia) I found fish based collagen powder.

I noticed that they had another type. Unscented and 100% fish collagen. But the box was $30. If it goes down I might get one and see.
