Possible new bow start
« on: February 29, 2024, 12:23:56 pm »
The first pic is the trunk of an osage tree I planter 15 to 20 years ago. The second pic is of the crown of the tree and the  shoot on the right I will cut soon . It is about 2" in diameter and I'm hoping to make 2 pole bows from it. I'll keep y'all posted with my progress.

Pat I will be watching also. You are getting the pop ups too I see. They change when you reopen the post. First time it was a photo showing a lady with robust breast laying on her back with quote saying are camping photos going to far. I don’t think that was part of your post between to pics .
Well I'll say!!  Osage is king!!

I don't know where it is all coming from or how it got here but is really is a distraction.

They must be tailoring them to your search history. What have you been up to Arvin?!?! ;)

On a serious note - I am excited to follow as well. Nice to see the plantings producing. Everyone tries to discourage from planting bow wood due to the time for return, but this shows it’s worth it on some level.

Ya this is very cool to see actually.  Not often you see a build from a tree that the builder planted himself

That tree tells me you have been at this awhile Pat. You have helped us so much. Thanks for answering the same questions over and over for all those years and still doing it.

Look forward to seeing whatever you do with it.

I'm heading down to do more clearing along our driveway so I'll go ahead and cut this shoot. I'll document the process as I go along.
Guys, I appreciate the good words. I learned this stuff by asking questions and helpful folks contributed to my knowledge. That is what PA is so good about, folks helping folks so lets keep it up for others to soak up the knowledge.  :OK

I cut the shoot today. I'll give it a few days to quit oozing sticky sap then saw it to length, cut in half lengthwise then bind the 2 halves back together with spacers between to all for good air circulation to aid the drying process. Looking at the rings it is 7 years old with 5 heartwood rings and 2 sapwood rings. I'll use the sapwood ring under the bark as the back. Here are a few pics of the downed pole...

I agree. It looks like you could go to a heart wood ring if you wanted to.

Long enough you could probably get four bendy handles.

Nice stave. Will b watching for this one in the future.
