Tried making a stain from the husk of black walnut for some tanned leather I have. The best results I had were from rubbing the inside of the wet husk directly on the leather and leaving it. I tried boiling husk and using that but it didn't seem to take very well. Any advice would be nice

Have a peek at the Utube of the Wandering Bull.com showing staining leather with walnut dye.

I left black walnuts sitting in a bucket for a year by accident. The husks rotted and a black thick syrup gathered in the bottom I collected it and mixed with vodka and it makes a great stain

I just boil them down, keep removing the junk and keep boiling until it thickens up, then stain it and add a little alcohol, the longer you cook it the darker it will get. Takes a while. Pappy
