Odd idea for Horn Bows!
« on: May 15, 2008, 05:21:00 pm »
So i was talking with my dad, who is a vet about him getting me some horn. It was a vague conversation but he mentioned that horn was almost exactly the same material as our fingernails and toe nails so... I was thinking, if you collected lots of the clippings from nails could you use then like a sinew backing but as a nail(i think that sounds a bit weird) belly? This seem impossible but if you had enough it may just work.

What do y'all reckon?

That would be more like a glue belly with finger nails for texture...... :P
Horn is glued on in one piece per limb and spliced in the handle. Thats not going to work.... ::)
Its November, I'm gone hunt'in.......

On the topic of vets and horn bows - a local vet who is into reinacting the turkish culture from a 1000 years ago has made some 25#-30# replica's [ struggle to call them horsebows ] using 3 sections of cow horn per limb instead of a continuous strip epoxied to a timber core them bound in red and black leather . They shoot arrows perhaps 50 yards and weigh at least 4 pounds .

Fingernails does not seem so odd if you could see these bows .

I have used more than two horns in a bow , but man is it a lot of work .The butt joints between the horns need to be tight ,as perfect as you can get, to keep the bow from wanting to hinge at the joint. I read that some of the Turkish bows had many small strips of horn arranged like bricks.

You could give hooves a try .   ::) ;D
