Red Oak log diameter for staves

I had a large Red Oak come down last month, most of tree is off the ground. I've been eyeing a couple straighter sections to consider for stave logs. What's a good diameter log, to split Red Oak staves from. I'm looking at one section about 5.5" in diameter and another about 11" in diameter. Thanks!

I'd say anything 2" and up.

Yes but be wary since the log was out in the weather for awhile. jawge

I agree with George and you want to use the whitewood right under the bark.

 Hard to tell from the photo whether that discoloration in the under bark  sapwood is fungus. Looks suspicious to me.
