Curved stave

Do these staves look ok? There's a lot of natural curve to the hickory. It's the way it is drying. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Greg.

It's natural do to inside stresses in the wood. Generally speaking this can be corrected with with stream or dry heat as you are building your bow.

Searching the web I found this post from here. Pretty much addresses my questions about natural reflex. Guess I should of done a bit more lookin first.

Looks like you got some nice stuff there. Unless I'm missing something. Like Pat said, you can make some adjustments with heat as you go, if needed.

I have found sideways bend in hickory hard to correct with heat or steam, I should say easy to correct but hard to keep it from going back.

I have found center shot bows to be much easier to make with staves like these. Just my experience.

The long ones are 7' long. This is new to me and my son. We have a couple more in the shed. The three have zero knots. We are going to cut them down some soon to aid in the seasoning. We probably would have cut the tree a bit different if we had any real idea what we are doing.

All else fails, you can saw them into billets and when you join them together you can correct for the bend. Mind you, that's getting kinda technical, but plenty of folks can walk you through a Z spliced handle here.

JW with a surname like Halverson, I was not surprised when you suggested halving the staves into billets :D (good idea though)
