How about no sinew or lam bows?
Why must we make simple things so complicated?

If y'all want to try complicated things I'm fine with it lol, good luck. I'm fine with no sinew or lams but I'm fine with rawhide backs

I don't see anything wrong with the knots.

I would say do whatever you are comfortable with, weather that is backing, selfbow, whatever.  I know I'm best at long single piece D-bows, so that's what I'll do.  The ash will be a first for me though.

Gonna open this up to old newbies, too?  Some folks find their round tuit later than others!  Life gets in the way!

Indeed, I'm 52 and just made my first bow last spring. I am working on a lam bow at the moment, but my wife wants a bow and I am thinking I may try an ASL in red oak for her. If I get to it before the May 15 deadline I will post it here.

Here is the stave ill be working with. It's black locust and 64" long. I may trim it down to 60" with a 60# @ 25" draw. The stave gained some backset after it was split out of the log. It's not fully seasoned so im going to rough out to near finished dimensions, get it down to one growth ring, and then let it sit for a couple weeks.

If possible I would go longer if I where you.  60# seems to stretching it for a 60" stave, and locust frets if it is overstrained at all.  That does look like a challenging kink in the grain at the end though.

I think I'll do a static recurve. I think if I can keep the limbs thin I can avoid the bl frets. The kink is a knot thats on one side of the stave so its going to be removed eventually and wont cause any issues.

As much as I want to create a functional bow, I also want to push the limits and learn as much as I can from this piece of wood.
