Advice needed(long draw short bow)
« on: October 05, 2020, 07:35:31 am »
Ok I have a bow that is 64" long, it's 3" wide at the widest and straight pyramid tapers to 1/4 inch at the tips. It's a hickory self bow. I'm about to start floor tillering this week. I'm trying to get the finished bow to 50-55lbs at 32inch is this possible without taking massive set? Would trapping the back help? Possibly heat treating the belly Marc St.Louis style, or both?

Heat treating will help, trapping will help but you are still pushing the limits of this bow by drawing to twice it's length.

With those specs, you will minimize the set by building a bend-through-the-handle design.

So would doing both help more or weaken it too much? It's too late for bend through the handle.

At 3" wide you have a pretty good chance of it not taking too much set. Just make sure the wood is very dry.

Would you recommend any treatment? I haven't weighed it yet but using your formula I was figuring about 24oz would be the goal but I'd be scared to take any off the sides ahead of time

I would pay more attention to set than any formula. At 3" wide I bet you will end up pretty close anyway.

I would try to keep the limbs wider and thinner than the pure pyramid, like the Eiffel tower style.

The fryou mean leave the tips stiffer and thinner? The bow is already shaped in a pure pyramid right now

In that case, you can probably narrow the limbs near the handle. 3 inch might be a little too much, forcing it to be too stiff or too thin there. Too many variables. Just go slow while checking the tiller often, without stressing the limbs too much, please. The tips for about 8 inches should be narrow but thick enough not to bend at all and can be recurved.

Isn't the point of a pyramid to tiller it arc of the circle? I don't want to recurve it I'm afraid it would stress the limbs more. I want to avoid as much set as possible. I knew this design would be pushing it without adding extra stress to the wood
