Ontario is a vast area.  Hickory is fine here.

Hickory is ring porous so you could buy a 2" board with straight grain from A&M Woods and chase a ring

Hey marc i really enjoyed working with the elm stave you sent me probably gonna email you for another!

I do have a very rough "floor tillered" hickory stave but the back of the stave had a large chip on the face when i received it. so now i have to chase a ring. I found it no where as easy as it was with the ash stave and no info online on how to chase a hickory growth ring. Mostly just people stripping the bark and leaving it as the back of the bow. If anyone has info on how to aquire a hickory stave from ontario and/or any tips on how to safely chase a hickory ring let me know THANK YOU GUYS!

I've chased rings on hickory before. It helps if they are fairly thick. Usually the outer rings are very thin. You want to go slow as it likes to tear out into other rings if you are not careful. Doesnt quite have the crunch that you would feel if you were chasing a ring on an osage.

I find that osage and hickory tend to have the most info out there and since osage is more expensive and aparently more difficult to work with i would like to stick with hickory or any other white woods. I am though open to try any other white wood thats available but unfortunately i live in the the city and further more am glued to nursing my mom through her cancer so cannot really just take a walk out and cut down a tree. So i have to rely on anyone within the province who can sell me staves 😁
