Idea wanted
« on: May 14, 2020, 07:19:45 pm »
This Boo Yew came in a bit underweight and a bit slow so I thought I would pike it and take another shot at it. It's 66" now so I can lose a bit. The problem being that it's got recurves. I heated the Boo and separated it from the belly on the recurve. It came apart very nicely. I plan to resteam and bend new recurves. I've tested the idea on an old test limb and it seems to work OK. I can scrape the old epoxy off all but the last 1/4-1/2". I need a way of scraping the glue right down into the point by the "C" clamp in order to keep a nice glue line. I've tried a no. 11 Exacto blade and it gets close but I thought maybe one of you might have a better idea.

Put something abrasive in there and make little bow saw with a strand of tough string and saw away.

8 1/2” x 11“ sheet of sandpaper folded in half. Draw it with a hand on each side.

I tried that. It was too thick to get right into the crack. One sheet of wet and dry might work but I was a little chicken to use that because it's waxed(I think) and i didn't want to contaminate the joint. What I used was a length of thread that had a rough texture then blew it out with the compressor. The picture is the re bent recurve. It's not glued yet. It should close up great. This is going much better that I expected.

I'm pleased with how well it went. On one end I wrapped with bike tube and it turned out great(first two pictures) and on the other I used clamps (third and forth) and it didn't go so well. I braced it and it was over 40# but there was a bit of a hinge on one limb. By the time I got it sorted it was down to 36#@28".

I thought what the heck I'll chrono it anyway. 361 grain arrow(double checked) 36# DW (double checked) and I got this. I did 5 shots 200,199,199,198 and 200. It was a new string and to get the last one I raised the BH up about 1/2". The reflex is staying at 3 3/4". I'm pumped ;D ;D ;D

Nice save. Boo and yew are a great combo, worth the effort to repair properly.

I've been looking at my fastest bows looking for similarities. They are all R/D but the only thing that seems to stand out is that the best of them(those that shoot in the 190's) all have some reflex in the inner/mid limb(red area). Does this ring any bells with anyone? Most of my bows start out with reflex along the whole limb and I suppose the ones that take set in that area could just be damaged enough to drop the speed a few fps. Any ideas?

PS Not very even are they ;D ;D

I'm going to tart it up and then start a new thread. I tested it this morning and it was down to a steady 197 :( :(. I left it out in the shop last night and the humidity is 65-70 out there. It's standing behind the stove today to see if it makes and dif but I think it was a flash in the pan. Pretty big flash though ;D got my attention.
