« on: May 10, 2020, 02:57:21 pm »
heya so i have this one osage stave and its pretty cool/desperate, any possibility this could make a bow? ive chased about 1/3 of it and am not to that crazy rotten section yet... im pretty sure theres no way ill get a bow from this but its fun to chase the ring i just love the "feel" of osage...

Its doable, but it depends on how ambitious your intended bow will be regarding draw weight and length, and how patient you are.

Well, if the ugly end doesn’t work out, you could still have a good billet.

Hole In The Bow Chuck would love that stave.  8)  It will be a challenge but if you listen that stave can teach you a lot. Get it down to floor tiller stage and see what she looks like.

Yep it will be fun! And buchett.doland.. your pretty close its 57" heres that belly pick... so i have  a question... should it be a bendy handle because of its length? Or not because i would have to make it thin wich would cause problems around that hole?

You don't have to go narrow for a bendy handle bow. Just narrow the handle area for comfort and make it thicker there. When tillering get the outer 1/3 or each limb bending first then bring the bend back into the handle at full draw.

Cut off a section of 36" and you have a nice billet.

Take it slow and if you find yourself getting frustrated or confused set it aside and come back later.

Yeah im not quite sure what im going to do with it yet... on the lower hole area the grain doesnt grow around it its more like the grain is cut, i could probably chase down a few lower growth rings and get rid of that... or i could split it in half and get rid of both holes and get a 1.5" wide peace, or i could cut it at the holes and get a billet... not sure... it would be nice to get something from it though, my second peice of osage I've worked with and i love it.. can't get more though...  anyway whadya guys think? Thanks
