How I glue on an arrow rest
« on: March 15, 2020, 11:29:40 am »
I see a lot of varied arrow rests on selfbows, I prefer to hide mine under the handle leather, it looks better and doesn't leave a bump showing from under the leather.

I start by filing a cut-out place at an angle into the handle.

I chose a piece of oak burl for a rest, I test fit the piece to make sure there are no gaps between the future rest and the cutout I filed into the handle.

Next I rough up both glue surfaces with a toothing plane iron.

I like super glue for glueing on the rest, quick and easy.

I clamp the pieces together and wait about 10 minutes.

I use a belt sander to get rid of most of the excess wood, a half round file works as well, just takes a little more time, the burl wood is extremely hard.

Just off the sander.

I do the next part of the shaping with a half round file.

Ordinarly I use a bur on a dremel for the final shaping and to make a lip for my leather to rest against. This wood is so hard it only wants to burn so I finish up with a file.

A little blending with an orbital sander. I can see a little gap, a little super glue and sawdust will make it invisible.

Roughed out and ready to finish sand, I radious the rest so the arrow only sits in the middle, I radius the sight window to match the rest.

At this point I leave the rest alone until I shoot a few arrows and adjust the rest and sight window for optimum arrow flight. I can go lower on the rest or deeper on the sight window.

It looks like this when finished.

The mods could move this to the how to section if you think more folk would like to see it.
