Brian, I like the idea of the wood base and antlers. But to me the driftwood base is too large and takes away from the knife. Maybe a smaller piece of wood. .... Just my two cents, but who am I. Just an old stoner.  John

I know what your say Stoner. I was thinking that before I tried it. It's a pretty good sized knife and I think it'll be ok. If it doesn't I'll make something else.

PS anyone ever use linseed oil? Does it dry hard?

Linsseed oil soaks in, I find tung oil as a better alternative.  I've used tung oil as a wet sanding application and creates its own filler for a smooth glass finish. John

The linseed oil did really soak in. I've never tried it before. My brother was cleaning out his house and this can was left from the previous owners. I'm thinking it's pretty old but I don't think it was ever opened and seems to be good yet.

I'm thinking Frank from American Pickers might like this one. Nice colors and good subject matter. To bad for him cause I'm keeping the can.

Ps I like the looks but I'm wondering if it will just draw dust or if it will harden. Also wondering if my epoxy will stick to it.

if you haven't drilled the holes for the antlers, it shouldn't be a problem to get bond. Cannot imagine listed oil can penetrate that much.

Ah, yes and the tree is a great idea too, have a big thuja tree in my garden, and I will copy this next year. Have it already bought and hidden.

Thanks B2W. It really soaked up a bunch of this stuff. I'm guessing about 6 ounces in the two coats. If I warm it up with my heat gun it seems to draw it back out of the wood.

Well I think I'm pretty close to done here. I might do a little more finish work yet but I'm pretty happy.

Stoner I totally understand your concern with the size and taking away from the knife. I shared it but I gotta say this is my favorite knife and stand I've ever made. The pictures really don't do it justice. It is almost more of a center piece though it just looks cool from every angle.

I really enjoyed doing this thread sure glad I didn't screw it up. Thanks everyone for looking

I have one of those linseed oil cans from my fathers work bench back in Michigan. Just like the looks of it on a shelf with the rest of my archery stuff. John

Thanks Stoner. I usually make a knife and stand up for our Christmas gift exchange. I showed this one to my dad and step mom last night. They've both been watching the whole process. My step mom said I couldn't give this one for our gift exchange. She said it was to nice. Now I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. It'd sure look great in some fancy hunting lodge. I've got a few ideas.

PS my 5 year old grandson was just fascinated with the knife. I told him he had to be very careful with it that it could break just like glass. He very carefully looked at it from every direction. Amazing cause he's pretty rough with most everything. He is a young artist though. He's a natural. I love looking at his drawings and crafts
