started a new one. . .
« on: November 30, 2019, 01:56:22 pm »
I just started a new bow for my son for Christmas.  A couple of observations:

1.  Chasing a ring on osage is really therapeutic.
2.  Osage is such a dream to bend with heat.--It is nice to feel (finally) like I know what it will do before I start.
3.  This piece has some really beautiful color and character in it.
4.  I hope it doesn't break. . .

Must have been stating the obvious.  Thought others would chime in on the joys of playing with osage.

Should be a gooder!  Maybe, I should say " They should both be good ears!  I'm about to rough out a stave for "Little Fiddle Woman"!  Got to check the rings, though!  Haven't decided on Osage or Hickory!

I can relate to what you brought up. I was able to get my hands on some really nice Osage this past summer at a traditional bow shoot at Denton Hills here in PA. The staves had been cut over 15 years ago. What started as three heavy, large staves turned into seven workable staves when I returned home. Thick rings and very few knots made it really nice to work with. I made three bows. Two recurves and one longbow and was amazed how well these three shoot. I shot an 8-pt buck with the one I named “Thumper” this past October. I’m currently working on another one from this wood for a buddy of mine.
Good luck with your sons bow. Based on the other bows you’ve turned out I know it will be one he will cherish.

Your right on all accounts.  Funny that most folks would see it as...something other than fun.
