Might try a pound or two of dry ice in the hole - cover the hole with dirt - dead rats by morning!  Works well on prairie dogs!

You can bait them with something that once eaten will produce a high volume of gas. Rats don’t have the ability to burp or vomit so their stomach will explode. Which also means they are fairly reluctant to eat anything they aren’t familiar with. If you wanted a pet safe route. Incase a dog gets ahold of a poisoned rat they find dead.
With traps, it looks like the bucket with a spinning drum and ramp works pretty well. You can do the same with a resetting trap door instead of a spinning drum. Though a trash can would be better than a 5 gallon bucket, unless you put 6” of water in the bucket, since they can jump very well.
