Can anybody ID this mushroom? - update: DON’T EAT THIS!!
« on: September 03, 2019, 08:55:44 am »
Every summer, there’s a group of these mushrooms growing in the same spot.  I’m having trouble identifying them.  They’re 5-10” in diameter.  Does anybody know what they are?

It turned out that these are not “Parasols,” but “False Parasols” a.k.a. “Vomiters.”  I cooked some up and thought I was fine, but after about six hours, I was VERY sick.  All okay now.  It’s not a liver-endangering toxic variety, but made for a bad night.

DON’T EAT THIS!!

Giant umbrella mushroom (parasol)
Is the ring on the stem movable?
If so, is it a parasol.

Macrolepiota procera is the latin name.

Aha!  Thanks, Andrew!  That jives with literature, and yes, the ring moves.  So it’s considered “choice edible.”  Unfortunately, somebody just mowed over them before I learned this.  Oh, well.  They’ll be back.

Most of the parasol I found, I dried, then crushed to a powder. I use the powder for the sauce tasting a little bit like mushroooms... ;)

Today I will make that "chicken of the woods"...
