Pacific Yew Longbow 68"ntn 50#@29"
« on: August 22, 2019, 08:11:09 am »
I made this bow from a yew stave that I got from Keenan Howard a while back. It had some character so I opted to back it with some kangaroo rawhide for a little added security. I decided to make this bow ambidexterous so I did a little wrap around beaver tail arrow pass that covers both sides. The bow is 68" long and pulls 50#@29".

Nice. I like the simple, clean ones.

Always love to see your bows and pics.
The nocks are really nice, next time I will try to shape them before glueing, too.
How the heck do you make such rigid looking handle wraps? The stitching is outstanding!

yes, I like how the roo hide interacts with the yew sapwood. it's hard to notice unless you're looking close.

Thank you. Shaping the tips before glueing them up is the trick to getting a point like that. It's not to hard. I do it on the belt sander (watch your fingers!) As for the handle wraps, I learned a lot from John Strunk. His handle wraps always jumped out at me. He taught me how he cut the leather to fit tight and how to do this particular style of stitching. I keep telling myself to experiment and come up with some other styles but I just keep coming back to this because it looks and feels so good.

It’s hard to make an ambidextrous handle look nice, I really like the arrow passes. Your bows seem to show great taste and all the skill to pull it off. And your youtube videos were a gift from the bow gods, they taught me to tiller and a lot of the things I wasn’t getting from reading. Awesome, as always
