Is this hophornbeam?

I found a few of these trees on our property and am hoping they are HHB.  I couldn't find any of the "hops" flowers, but maybe these are all male, or it's just too early?  Anyway, if any of you can ID this tree, your help would be much appreciated!

Looks like it to me. Bark while rough looking is very thin and flaky. Leaves kinda remind me of birch. I don't think they make seed every year. Some years I don't see any "hops" some year a bunch.

It does vary a bit from tree to tree or depending on the area.  It is a relative of Birch.

Make sure you seal the ends well, and the backs if you peel the bark off. Hop Hornbeam will split itself into fence rails overnight if not sealed. It is the on white wood I cut in the winter when the sap is down. I'd rather debark with a drawknife and scraper than risk them splitting on their own.

Thanks for the tip!  I always seal ends, but not usually backs for whitewood.  Probably should get into that habit...
