Knot Hole?

My stave is 72" long.
The hole is 27 1/4" from the nearest end.
The hole is 1" in diameter, with quite a bit of concavity down around the hole.

My question is what should my layout dimensions be?
Try to keep the hole close to the handle, or midway inthe limb?
I think this will be my upper limb.

I'd probably rather have mid limb. Do you have a picture? One inch actual hole? You will definitely need to follow the grain around the hole. Sounds like a challenge stave. I'd love to see it.

I will try to get a picture posted. It is a straight forward stave, except for the knot.

I like the ones that come out like the last picture Stoner posted. I personally would rather have a hole than a solid knot. I feel like I can trust the wood around a knot like the one Stoner posted. I like to use hand tools. Nothing against power tools. I just like the sound, feel and way hand tools allow you to follow grain.

I have no idea how I will follow a growth ring on this thing.

Just like chasing a ring on a clean back.  Use a scraper around it.  It took me several days of scraping to get a clean ring on this stave.
