Fine-point Sharpie on light-colored wood, white paint marker on dark-colored. Never had a problem with either, I've used them under Tru-oil, spar urethane, and several other finishes.

I haven't signed any of my bows, but my buddy wanted to name his so we used a fine Sharpie.  Then I lightly sprayed over it with urethane before he finished the bow with tung oil finish.  I think the light spray prevents smearing if you're using a wipe-on finish.  If you are spraying your finish, you wouldn't have to do anything.

Sharpie and put a real light coat of tru oil on first - after that sets up I rub it in as thick as I want. Haven't had any smears yet.

Lately, I've been doing as Bob. I use either a quill pen or a pen made with a small diameter switch cane I carved a point on and India ink. I used sharpies for years with pretty good success. I have notices that it does fade after a while or exposed to direct sunlight too long. India ink, on the other hand is quite permanent!  ;)      Pat
