Buying ground hide glue, what grade is appropriate for sinew back?

A lot of guys just use Knox gelatin. It's all just Jello

Knox is about as pure as hide glue comes and if you look real close at most wally world's there is a store brand for less than half the price.

Another vote for unflavored Knox gelatin.   I've used it for sinew backings.

I bought the actual hide glue granules at first then switched to Knox, I couldn't tell any difference except the price, Knox is dirt cheap.

Yep, the same thing, just more refined then the brown granules sold as hide glue.

You find it in the baking section at Walmart, you want the plain unflavored kind.

Hmm I've got cognitive dissonance going on. For some reason I'm hung up on knowing the grade of glue, and it's working time, and having choices.

Hide glues are rated according to color, smell, and taste. Higher grades are colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Unflavored gelatin is A#1 grade hide glue.

It is also pretty dang shelf stable!  And if you make up too much, just put it in the freezer. It is easier to thaw it and warm it up than it is to try to rehydrate a thick block.  Thick blocks will also spoil and/or get moldy in the drying process. (Don't ask me how I know this or why I threw up in my mouth when I was reminded of it)

The Knox I bought came in little packages, about a table spoon in each pack, there were 32 packs in a box. You only need to mix up what you need.

OK, I read through the 3 pages of the other hide glue thread. The amount of info and knowledge on the subject there is amazing.
But, with the discussions of fish bladders and sinew scraps and cooking times and glue strengths am I to understand that a simpler and just as effective glue can be had just by using the Knox gelatin..?

Sounds like it!  And you can use it to make cheesecake, too!   ! I think some one even posted how much to mix to back a bow with little waste, maybe Eric  Krewson.  Wow!  Food grade hide glue!

 Hide glue is a generic term ,there are different collagen type glues made out of different animal parts Knox is a combination of bone and other parts , different types have different gel times & strengths  for different applications , I think every body likes what there comfortable  using ,I have used rabbit skin glue with no issues and some claim it's not the best to use for sinew and have used different grades skin glue & clarified versions that I really like and played with different gel times , they all work but I prefer the slower gelling clarified ones , there are a lot of different opinions from different type bowyers !
