Is anyone else into carving spoons?

I've been teaching myself to carve spoons in between making bows - thought I'd share some and I'd love to see any efforts by you guys.

I recently cut some nicely spalted poplar down by the river - here's my latest spoon, still a WIP, but taking shape.

For sure, they are fun, quick carving projects that you can go out to a tree and cut off a limb and be carving in minutes. That's good looking spoon you have started there. Make sure to post  again when you are all finished up.

ohh man I like alot that handle. is that the bark on the handle or some kind of heat threatment?

I like spoon carving and always make some every summer while in holidays.
Here just some speedy ones made recently with a knife and a small gouge I always carry while outdoor

Nice work guys, I always use  a sow-back or a short-bend gouge for my spoon bowls, makes life a huge amount easier. For whittling with a gouge,  you hold the gouge like a pen, keep the tips of both your thumbs touching and kind of rock the work and spoon up and down and back and forth. It sounds more complex than it really is. The thumbs together triangulates everything and stops you pushing the gouge through your hand

Got 2 WIP one walnut and one cherry that will progress sooner or later.  Did a couple in cherry, cherry, gave one to my sister in law, kept one!  Lots of fun.  You can wrap your fresh wood in plastic wrap and throw it into the freezer to use later !

Spoons are best carved while the wood is fresh cut and wet. If you freeze it, it locks the moisture content in so you can work on it later without it drying out.

I like making them, also. Lately I just haven't had time to finish up some I've got started. It's nice to take a break from bow making and knapping.

Freezer?!?! Thanks for that idea....my wife's going to love the stack of sticks next to the hides in the freezer.

Sure is nice to have a couple hobbies to juggle. I like spoons because I can start and finish several of them in a good session. I'm learning to Kolrose now, and I'm wondering if I could even decorate a bow that way.
