I may try an ERC branch bow in an elb as I just remembered I have a half dozen of those of those I cut.

Kyle, black locust a eastern woodland style. I say that because its on my list of dream bows to build when I get some locust. Black locust was the wood of choice around here.
Red Oak its the gateway wood!

That's a nice list of woods you have there Kyle! Like them all :) Never gave much thought to ERC until I joined this forum, I have seen some real pretty ones in the last few months. Of course there's nothing like a good piece of hickory too. I could go on...and on lol

Very nice looking bow your working on there Mike!

Will post a picture tomorrow of the elm I been working on.  Just got a little bend in it and want to get a string on it before I do much more. Going to let it sit to make sure its dry before I do that. Going to get some other staves ready while I wait a little on this one. What I thought was my best locust, wasn't but oh well

Might be a peep before it’s all over. That knot has me a little worried and probably mandates a linen back, but i like the added security anyway and i have some rattler skins inbound.  At least the knot doesn’t go thru the back.

I don’t have enough overall length for static tips but i shoud be able to put a nice bit of gentle recurve with steam followed by dry heat to keep the whole limb working. It’s still plenty wide at about 2 1/2” so I’ll get some set but hopefully not too much. If i think it’s excessive I’ll glue on some built up tip overlays to keep the early draw weight up. Just wish the stave was 5-7” longer.

Got the bark stripped off my stave today. I was hoping to get two bows out of that one stave but It has  a pretty rough knot towards one end that was hidden under the bark and I’m gonna try to bypass it . I’ll rough her out and get it bending some time this week.

Hope to continue build come this weekend. Stave is still long and full width yet but will need to steam correct to center string. Also hope to remove a deflexed area in the 1 limb while I'm at it. Still some work to do before I can put a long string on it.   Mike

Took another long look at my stave. I’m going to try to get two staves out of it after all. If it works out, I’ll have a stave for the trade and a good character stave. If not, I’ll have none and pull the bark off of another one. I may mark the grain well and saw it rather than split.

My staves will be here Friday or so. I said Osage but it might be hop hornbeam? I change my mind a lot, its not final till the first shaving comes off. It will depend on which one I think I can make a better bow from. Nothing to do with the staves its the bowyer.

i don't know which way to go either. I glued up a tri-lam hickory, walnut, hickory in a D/R design today. I don't know if I should go that route or an osage self bow. I wish I could read my victims mind to see which they would rather receive lol

Timmy, either one would likely suit any of us just fine. I’m looking forward to seeing and shooting someone else’s work. As of now I have only touched a couple self bows other than mine and never shot anyone else’s.
