Cascara bow
« on: January 09, 2018, 09:51:37 pm »
Cascara, Yew in handle, burl tip overlays, Hickory fiddle back ion the back. 55@27 68 inches long. I just can't remember the exact width, around 1 3/4 tapering to tips if I recall right. I gave this bow away about a yr. ago.

Nice!  I like the handle wrap, hemp or sisal?

The wrap like the string are synthetic.

Good to see you post and good to see a Cascara bow.  I still have a piece of Cascara from you acquired several years ago.  I've been eyeing it, lately.

So, no backing?  Would you go shorter with no backing?  Any recommendations specifically for Cascara?

Looks very nice.

Parnell,
My strong suggestion for Cascara is to back it with rawhide, silk, ect. I would also suggest you rread the entire thread
Marc posted (Buckthorn bow) I have no proof Cascara and the Buckthorn Marc is using have identical qualities, but both are Buckthorns, and his descriptions seem to match.

Very nice Brian.  How thick was the Hickory backing?

Marc,

About 3/16 although my only decent pic is of the handle area, if you could see how the fiddleback poped when held in you hand, it was a real rare piece of hickory for me to find, best of all it was thrown out as trash from a cabinet shop. I should have highlighted it with some stain. I think I prefer maple for a backing for this wood though, super thin white oak would be good in my mind as well.

This bow like the last I posted on your thread is well overbuilt, especially with the fiddleback in play. Both bows were spliced at the handle.

I missed that it was hickory backed.  I will use rawhide on my attempt.  I'm looking forward to that stave...thanks Brian.

I used 1/8" thick Maple and may try and go a bit thinner on the next bow I make with Buckthorn.  As it is the Buckthorn was starting to get a bit too thin for my tastes

Marc,

You have work red cedar, and yew. I think buckthorn falls somewhere in between. Yes, I would go much thinner for a bow for myself. What do you think of a wide native bow sinew backed?

I would put Common Buckthorn alongside Yew, at least in compression
