Using nut instead of a threaded insert (3pc takedown)

Hi guys.
Just a little question- Is it possible to use a hex nut or a tee nut instead of a threaded insert in a 3pc TD? Meaning, to glue in the nut inside a countersink hole in the riser (on the belly side) and attach the limb with a bolt?
Am I missing something here? Any design flaw? (assuming I use 1 bolt and a pin)

The problem is that a t-nut or standard nut put into a recess isn't going to be inherently stable, the threaded section isn't long enough and you are unlikely to be able to get them plumb square. You would also have to add another lam to cover them on the belly side.
A well drilled hole, plumb square to the riser 'face' is key. If you get the hole perfect then tap it  and epoxy in a threaded insert you won't have any problems.

I have the holes already drilled perfectly. My problem  that I don't have an insert. That's why I'm trying  find replacements.

Marc made a take-down with toilet bowl mounting hardware.

There is a thing called a Heli-Coil used for repairing stripped threads. It may work for this and it should be available everywhere. Do a search and see what you think. I've never used them so you're on your own.

Can you just look a bit harder for an insert? Many people say they can't find something where they live and then google shows that they live next to a supplier.

Home Depot has them, although they didn't look like real nice ones.

Actually i have used the tee nuts on a 3 pc td and they worked great

I see you  2 nuts, would it work with only one?
Can you give some details about how to install it?

They do make a longer than normal nut.
We used these in the past. not sure if they may work for you or not. the part# is 37815 from fastenal.com

If you are going to use the tee nuts i think you should use 2. My riser was a 3 pc and i installed the tee nuts between layers before glueup. I drilled the hole the size of the bolt and where the nut installed went the size of the nut and i also countersunk the thickness of the flange so everything fit well. As far as i know it is holding up fine but i don't own it anymore

What am I missing here? Isn't the nut strong enough?

Insurance. You need to know the shear strength of the bolts relative to the forces being applied before you can start eliminating things.

I used grade 8 bolts so plenty strong, why 2 bolts? You asked my opinion and thats it, i like the feeling of a little added reasurance, redundancy in safety is ok in my book, heck just buy the insert kit from bingham, its not very expensive then u can use one bolt and a locator pin.
