my new favourite bow / dbl.curve bamboo composite...
« on: March 12, 2008, 07:19:09 pm »
hi!  -  this is another bow i made from a blank my buddy chris didn't like! i had the blank sitting around for a year or so and it was the last bow i finished in 2007.
it's the same limb cross section as chris' BOM/BOY winning bow, except this here has 2 stripes of black walnut, 4 vertical stripes of bamboo and one stripe of purple heart as a core laminate. madake-bamboo on both back and belly.
the bow is 70" ntn and could easily be pulled to 31" or more. i pull the bow to 29" and i have not noticed any loss of reflex from the beginning.
the bow pulls 58#@29" and shoots a 540gr arrow at 191fps.
i shoot the bow with a fastflight string.
the bow has no noticeable handshock.

thanks for looking,

frank

I love the shape.  Is there a bow of a particular culture its patterned after.  Reminds me of north asian styles.

thanks for the comments!

@dave: this is a hybrid between a japanese yumi (following some design criteria concerning gross section, position of the nodes of the bamboo, also the bamboo used is japanese) and the south-indian double-curve (originally a hornbow). chris and i learned to make these from jaap koppedrayer!

Cool bow! I like those detail shots - nocks, and grip area :).

Frank,
I was wondering if you have any photos or drawings of how you laid out that bow? I am planning to make a bow as a birthday present for a friend of mine and that design would be just right. I'm sure some of the other guys here would also like to see how this one goes together. Many thanks.
