Natural deflex
« on: February 12, 2017, 12:57:22 pm »
I have a stave that has about 5" of deflex in it now that it's dried. The deflex is right where the fade will start on a bow and only one end. . If I steam out the deflex will it return during tiller or will I be starting with a clean  slate so to speak.

Depending on the species of wood I've had pretty good luck steaming it and then locking it with dry heat. You will lose some of your bend so remember to put in more than you need. How much is an educated guess :D. I go about a third more, maybe.

I've had no experience with Osage but I hear it bends well. Wait for someone else to comment on how well it holds.

I tried steaming declex out of one limb on a hickory bow I made. One limb was pretty flat and the other had some deflex. I used a reflex form and was successfull of getting the deflex out of it but it never held the the amount of reflex the other limb did. So you might want to take in consideration putting more reflex one limb if it has more natural deflex in order to come out with balanced limbs

Can you post a side view pic of the deflex ?  A small deflex in that area can translate into a larger deflex at the tip  is the deflex spread out along the limb ?  And how seasoned is the stave ?

You have to resize the jpeg with a app I think 640 by 400 or so thing like that if that's what your asking  if your asking how to attach it ,it's  the button on the lower left in the text screen

Would work, I did it a few times. I prefer hot dry air (sealing the stave with grease) an adding a little reflex ~ 1 inch
