Osage w/ natural r/d profile- HOLEy hole
« on: February 09, 2017, 09:44:49 pm »
Hi friends. So this is new for me, but I thought it might be fun and very educational to attempt building a bow from a rather challenging branch of osage with ongoing input from all of you wood-bow-loving folks here on PA.

I found this piece on the ground the same hedgerow I've told ya'll about before. I'm currently in the process of chasing my target ring, which is pretty deep in the wood. This will leave me w/ a notably crowned stave, but this is osage!

As you can see from the pics, it's got a natural r/d profile that I hope to balance with dry heat on a caul once I've got the thing to symmetrical dimensions and floor tillered.

If it ends up a shooter it should have lots of character w/ some funky holes and such.

Take a look and let me know what you think. Feel free to tear me a new one and be as honest as possible.  :)

Cool. Glad you'll be checking it out Mulch. Even if it ends up a total failure, at least we can say we tried!

That's an interesting piece. It would be even more interesting built as-is  :)
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

lol DC. He probably hasn't quite  finished it... he's gotta shoot it before he can call it done. give it time to warm up so he can brush snow off his target and shoot 100 or so arrows to make sure it's done.

I am having problems with pics but if you don't have it finished before I can manage the pics , I have a similar stave with very tiny rings that I just went to work on. Pretty clean no big knots like yours. I hope for it to be a sexy smooth shooting bow. I have my doubts on me getting one though. Arvin

That's a neat stave to start from! I'll be interested to see how you approach the left limb.

Epic table cover as well.  O:)

The nice thing about a reflexed kink like that is you know it isn't going to pull out after you straighten it.
