Newbie from Wisconsin
« on: January 29, 2017, 06:43:57 pm »
Just wanted to make an intro! Name is Chuck. I'm currently in Wisconsin, but lived in Montana for 20 years. Been bowhunting for almost 45 years now. Shot a modern recurve back in the late 80's. Had a little success with it but wounded more animals than I could tolerate. Still loved to shoot trad. But my main hunting bow became a compound. Although I never used all of the bells and whistles that every one thinks you need to use with them.

My desire to get back into trad surfaced again and last year I shot a Samick Sage. Because I'm on disability I spend alot of time at the computer. Found some great self bow videos on YouTube. With my construction/carpentry backround I soon realized I could do this. So I've finally bought a subscription to PA and joined the forum.

I plan on starting with a boardbow beginning this winter yet. Wish me luck!!!!

Thanx

Chuck

Welcome and good luck on your build.  Post pictures of your progress and ask for advice if you need it.  There is a wealth of knowledge shared on this site.

Welcome from the Fox Cities.  Don't know how far you are from Hartford, but there is a great hardwood lumberyard (Kettle Moraine Hardwoods) near it.  I've found nice hickory, hard maple, and Eastern Red Cedar boards there and their prices are good.  Avoid the red elm, though.  It's an hours drive for me and I make the trip a few times a year.  I started with a Sage, too, and they are terrific bows.  Very forgiving.  Then I started making my own and, unfortunately, chose to shoot them. ;)
Ask lots of questions before you start your board bow.  You'll get a ton of good advice from the bowyers on here.
