Bamboo Backed Hickory - My Best Yet!
« on: January 01, 2017, 01:53:57 pm »
Been some time since I've posted, but have been visiting often to see how things are developing in the land of hand crafted bows. The bar has been raised and I'm amazed by the quality of builds I'm seeing.
I make a basically "Plain Jane"bow, done a few recurves, plenty of stave bows, and am starting to figure out Bamboo backing using various cores. This one is a Bamboo backed Hickory that has me smiling as the overall performance is remarkable.
It's 63.5" ntn - 54#@27". Weighs 18.6 ounces on my postal scale. Widest limb dimension is 1-3/8". Upper limb tip is a shade over 3/8" and lower is 7/16". I'm using a 10 strand Fast Flite string with extra strands in the loops.
Just a joy to shoot - flat out to 20 yards, and Fast!!! No shock and fairly quiet even without the Beaver I usually use on the string.
I made a bow for a friend and his son works at a great sawmill locally and he got me 9 hickory boards - knot free and 5/4" by 6"to 9" in width - 8' long. Going to try a Hickory recurve next.

Bro, that's a solid shooter!   Bamboo on hickory is a great combo with a coul inches of Perry reflex, too.

Good luck on the next one, too!

I personally don't like that cut in shelfs. But your work is awesome and the tiller is spot on. Great bow!

Thanks to all for the positive feedback!

Simson - I know that cut in shelfs can weaken the bow overall, but as I prefer a grip with a palm swell, I leave plenty of material in that area to compensate for the  depth of cut.

I know it's not wholly traditional to have one and shooting off the knuckle for some works great, but having a shelf for me makes it more consistent. I guess it could be considered as a crutch of sorts.
