First Bow/ Fantasy Piece
« on: December 31, 2016, 03:33:44 pm »
Just finished my first bow, and made some arrows. More towards the "fantasy" side. Since its my first, and I will likely keep it as a memento I wanted to make sure it would look nice on a wall.
All the carving was done by hand and brushed over with gold metallic paint. Final draw weight is 40# at 29 inches. Definitely more fun than building furniture. Already designing a new one that will be as visually appealing albeit more with more performance designed in with more thought into the mathematics/ tiller/ physics of the bow design. Can't wait to have that one done in the spring! Wish I could post more pictures, hope you all like it! let me know your thoughts!

Do you have a picture of it braced and at full draw?

It looks beautiful, but hard to give feedback without braced, unbraced, and full draw pics.

beautiful. are the lines on the back carved in? If so, I'm scared.
love the nocks- very original
great for a first bow, assuming the tiller is ok

Good job on making the first bow :)
I'd be a little wary of the gluelines at the handle. Next time make sure all surfaces mate really well.

Looks good and the binding is nice and neat on the arrows.

Don't think much of your quiver!

So here are the pictures. Sorry about the full draw picture, I had to take it on my phone with a 10 second timer and hope it came out well enough, also very cramped indoors. Also, what is the desired brace height? this is 7 inches from string to the center of the handle.

It's black walnut with hickory backing. I just got the wood from pine hollow long bows. My next will be Osage and hickory

Nice work.  For F/D pics I find that a video on my phone works very well, then I simply do a screen capture of the video when I hit F/D

Nice Elvish bow! Good for Prince Nuada hehe. Did you or did you not carve design into back? It could weaken the bow, even though I know Will S made ash warbow with worm tunnels on the back of bow that didn't fail.

the designs are carved into the hickory backing, however the backing used was cut thick initially, and then the carvings only run about 2-5mm deep.
