Sinew backed yew Hupa replica
« on: November 08, 2016, 12:08:12 pm »
I posted this in the Native bow post a couple weeks ago. 40" long sinew backed yew. 58# @ 20". Painted with red ocher picked up in California and yew ash for black. I strained both these paints through cloth to make smooth paint with no chunks. The old bow this was copied from had much brighter paint, but may have been paint from trade as it was made at the end of the 1800s. I have no doubt the Hupa had better natural paint than me, but wanted to keep it natural to the best of my ability. Brain tanned deer handle. Deer rawhide wrapped tips and a 2 ply sinew string. Hazel arrow and bobcat quiver to complete the set

Sweet bow, Chuck. That style has been on my "list" forever. I seen my first few Hupa bows 3 years ago. Steve (Yew archer) made them.

Very cool little bow, Chuck. I made a similar one a few years ago but it broke at the handle. It was my fault because I made the handle too narrow. I'm sure I'll do another some day.

masterful done replica! I always wondered if the original has also that amount of drawweight; have you an idea about the thickness?
I know just a touch of the sraper on belly eliminates a good amount of draweight.

I'm convinced the colors on the Hupa bow are trade paint, I have never seen an earth pigment in that bright red.

I like the whole set! That quiver of bobcat is great!
