6X6 bull elk (almost made meat)
« on: September 05, 2016, 08:35:39 pm »
My 13 year old son and I just got home from elk hunting this weekend.  We was sitting in the blind we made, when we heard this bull elk bugle, he was about 80 yards away at this point.  So I cow called, it seemed like eternity for him to make his way towards us.  As he was coming in he started his way to the back of the blind, instead of the way he was suppose to come.  LOL as to be expected, so I had to slowly make my way out of the blind, as I was clear of the blind he stood 30 yards away just looking.  I softly let out a few more cow calls, he cautiously moved closer, as he was now 15 yards away.  Just a aspen tree and small pine stood between us.  A few more step and I had my shot, I drew and let the arrow fly only to have it deflected by a branch and missed my mark.  My heart sank,  man that was my first opportunity with my primitive gear.  Oh well I had fun with my son, and we will be back again to chase the ever elusive elk.  And hopefully I will be posting pics of the kill.  But for now here a few pics of the set up and elk country.

Sounds like you had a blast! Next time you will make meat but
You didn't miss out on a good time! Loved the story and also the pics of your setup. That quiver is amazing! Did you make it yourself?

Good set up. Good equipment , wouldn't that have been cool? Ahh, that's why we call it hunting and look at the memories. Congratulations.

I love those aspen woods. Reminds me of my two trips to Colorado. Great adventure for you and your son. Better luck next time.

AHHHH, reminds me of trips to my family's cabin. We have a place up on the Red Cloud Loop(Oaks Park). Not too far from where you live.

Thanks fellas. We will have another chance at it.

Pat I love the Aspen tree also. So much so I name my daughter Aspen.

Jojo  I know where red cloud loop is the local archery club usually has a annual shoot up there at iron springs.

Bummer about the arrow deflection. Being that close to the bull must have been pretty exciting to you both. Hope you get another chance soon.
Great looking arrow, bow and quiver. What are the specs on this bow?

Close enough for a shot with the gear you have chosen is, all by itself, a very respectable victory!

I consider close enough to smell 'em to be a feat!

Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.
