I'm tired of planing now......
« on: March 01, 2008, 11:14:44 pm »
Been busy working up some shoot shafts, here's a dozen dogwood shafts that I made for a trade, and another dozen I'm working on for myself, all hand planed down to 11/32". The second set is a dozen shafts of a dozen different woods, thought it would be pretty cool to make a completely mixed set if I can get them close in weight and spine. They're sourwood, silky dogwood, arrowwood viburnum, witherod viburnum, sweet shrub, buffalo nut, chinese privet, bush honeysuckle, hazelnut, salt cedar, multiflora rose, and white ash.

The mixed set still needs a final straightening, sanding, and tweaking. It's a job planing them down, but not too bad when you get the hang of it, and it's enjoyable work. Got a bunch of cane to straighten and work up, too.

A little bitty Stanly "thumb plane" or trim plane. You can get 'em at Lowe's for 7 or 8 bucks and they last forever.

Lots of patience, but like you said enjoyable work. Nice job, be careful to shoot only soft material.    Kenneth

Thanks, guys. Kenneth, that's why I like to use hardwood shoots-most of them will bounce off trees and rocks and keep on ticking.

Nice Steve. Pretty amazing getting 12 different shoots to be a matched set of shafts. :o 8) I have some red twig dogwood shoots from Germany I've almost got completed, some sourwood shoots scraped, bundled and drying and an assortment or other shoots in all stages of drying. Also I collected a good mess of river cane from my personal stash. ;D
I've gotta get a set completed for Pappy's shoot. It would be embarrassing  :-[ showing up with a mismatched set of cedars with a few canes thrown in. :o    Pat

ps. what ya needen in trade for that set! ;D 8)

bought my for $8 two years ago, after hundreds of arrows still as good as new; excellent tool!
