Buckthorn inspired
« on: July 31, 2016, 08:02:03 pm »
During Osage Outlaws outing...I was inspired to get my butt in gear a start working on a buckthorn stave that Greg aka Badly Bent gifted me about three Classics ago.  I know that he and Cody aka Misslemaster has a lot of experience with this wood,  soooo I did some research looking at their past posts on their bows.  I saw some wonderful bows.  So I took a little from Greg and a little from Cody and started my own bow...

I'm just getting started with this piece of buckthorn, And I wish I had taken some pics of the stave before I started whittling on it.  It had a little natural deflex in the handle so I used that to my advantage and added a little more with dry heat and then turned some reflex with dry heat into the mid limbs and tips   The front profile has a little "s" to it and I'm going to leave it as is. I'm going to let it rest a few days after adding the heat to it and then work on getting it to floor tiller.  Here is a few pics.

Shaping up nicely Bill, I hope you get a good bow out of it. I'd forgotten that you had a piece of that, should be well seasoned.

You made good progress on it in the heat Bill.  It's looking like a bow now.  I can't wait to see it finished up.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left
