Knife blanks

I plan on doing a lot of knife work this winter.  I had a bunch of annealed files and a piece of a large saw blade in my shop.  I had access to a metal cutting band saw today so I took advantage of it.  I cut out a bunch of knife blanks.  I try to get 2 out of each file.  I cleaned them up on a bench grinder.  This should keep me busy when it gets cold outside.  In case you couldn't tell, I'm a fan of drop points  ;D




I want to make a knife for my daughter and myself for deer season this fall.  I got them beveled and ready for some hand sanding before I heat treat them.

Great work man! I really like the look of the ones on the left. Looks like they'll make some excellent knives!

Most people don't like a point on a skinner,  but I really like the fifth one down middle row.  My favorite skinner looks a lot like that one.

Thanks guys.

You picked the only odd ball in the bunch Bill.  I'm not a big fan of that style.  When I was laying them out I realized I had made all drop points.  I thought I would make at least one different style.

I'm starting to realize my little 1x30 belt sander just isn't going to cut it as a knife grinder.  I was looking at the Grizzly knife maker sander but it has a lot of bad reviews about the belt not tracking straight, the tool rest is to small, and the only speed is super fast.  I guess I need to make a 2" x 72" grinder since I can't afford to buy one for a grand  :P   Me and Bubby have been discussing how hard it would be to make one.

Here's one I made when I just started sheet metal apprenticeship school. Quite the undertaking for an 18 year old but it's held up good throughout the years although there's a few things I wouldn't mind tweaking. Scraped parts off an old craftsman 1 x 30 sander. Half horsepower motor.  Takes a 1 x 42 belt which is available in lots of grits. I went through a period of time where I love making knives. Maybe I'll have to get back into it one of these days

Clint, there are a few plans on the internet.  I downloaded some and am almost finished making mine.  I need a couple of bearings, pulleys and V-Belt and I should be good to go.  Nice blanks you made.

Wow...Clint really nice designs there.That should keep you busy for sure.My neighbor is a horse shoeing farrier and dulls up lots of farrier rasps.Giving them away later.If you want some PM me I'll gladly send you some.
