Draw weight question
« on: March 25, 2016, 01:05:12 pm »
So if I am drawing 25 lbs at 14" where abouts would that put me at 29"?

White oak d bow 63" ntn 1 and an 8th wide at handle "fades". I realized my other failures have resulted almost entirely from being way overweight. Finally got a shooter after realizing this but came in at #30 lol.. A little off from the goal of #55

About 50# assuming you are on a short string lowish brace and you don't have to take off much to keep the tiller good.
If you want a 55# bow you have to be pulling it to 55# from the start UNLESS you see a problem with the tiller. You keep the poundage at your target and adjust the tiller to slowly bring the draw length back.
If you are pulling 25# as you are tillering, you are just going to end up with a 25# bow!

I assume 3# per inch.  So you can add about 45#.  Still pretty heavy but you got room to work.

That's an aggressive design. Tiller slowly or you are going to get a lot of set.

That's a pretty aggressive design. Oak, 55#..  63" pulled to 29" and 1-1/8 at the widest. I'm too inexperienced to chime in on anything cuz I couldn't see that bow surviving at my current skill level.

Well I can't imagine anyone else on here not surpassing my current skill set so that's a little troubling haha.. Maybe I'll shoot for 45 on this one. Thanks a lot!

i come up with about 62iish at 29,,that would be fresh,, I think with your design it will loose 5#,, depending on moisture content maybe a bit more,,
you will be close to your 55 @ 29 after break in,, :) if you have to adjust the tiller it may come in under weight

At 1 1/8 wide I would not attempt to go 50# with a stiff handle, you would be fine with a bendy handle design. I think about 30# is enough if you are using a stiff handle and fades. I normaly make a red oak with your demensions about 1 3/4" for a 50#@28" bow. I somethimes go down to 1 1/2" but they usually either break or take too much set.

DELS right if you want 50 pounds you start your tilling at 50 pounds. Never go past 50 #'s.

You can't build a wood bow through messurments.

Yeah it's a bendy handle, I figured if I left it slightly thicker at the handle I could narrow the handle a little under the 1 and an 1/8.. Guessing anyways. Well I knew it was thinner than what would  be ideal but it was such a perfect grain and bouncing towards the chipper so I rescued it.

1-1/8" is plenty narrow for the handle.  I'd leave it.

With experiance you will be able to narrow the handle on a bendy
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

How wide are your limbs?? I thought you meant 1 1/8 wide at the widest point.
