You choose backing (except fg) and you choose draw weight.

Besides doing this for the fun of it, various approaches to building RO board bows may be useful to others. So pictures of everyone's build materials/process would be REALLY cool!

Yeah take it easy buddy.

If it had hickory on the back then it wouldn't be a red oak bow!  >:D

Hey! The rules are the rules!  >:D ;D Seriously though, I was thinking the same thing. I don't have the glue for a laminate anyway. I was just curious. I will almost certainly stick with a self bow.

You should ask your Hickory backing guy if he has some straight grained quartersawn RO.  His prices were AWESOME!!!  I still can hardly believe that deal you got!!!

I definitely plan to get back in there one of these days, but it's kind of tough to catch him. I think he only opens his shop a couple of days a week. When I do head back, I'll let you guys know.

Straight growth ring lines there too. I took some pics and you can kinda see the detail on my phone, but for some reason they're too washed out to see anything on my pc screen. That's why I didn't upload them.

I've never made a board bow. On that piece would you want to run the bow from the top left to the bottom right?

If you can, if you have the width, yes. The amount of run-off on the face of this one falls within what I would consider acceptable, but there's no reason not to give yourself the best possible chance. I have plenty of width here because its 3.5" wide so I will be laying it out like you said to get as little run-out as possible.
