Unusual Happening
« on: January 31, 2016, 05:17:34 pm »
Yesterday I was cleaning more fish.
There is a small canal nearby where some Blue Herons hang out.
I start to hear one squawking and don't think to much of it.
Then the squawking got real hectic and seemed to be moving.
I was thinking mating season or something like that. ;)
So I stepped out where it was clearer. The squawking was above me.
I see this raptor, not as big as a Red Tail or Broad Wing and a lot lighter
in color. Hot on it's tail is a Blue Heron and another on it's way up. >:(
These three creatures played the thermal and engaged in combat for
at least 4-5 minuets before the hawk took off with the herons in hot
persuit. Never seen that before. :o

Lots of birds will run hawks and owls from a nesting area.

We have lots of great blue herons in Tidewater Va. Never been privileged to see such inter-action with herons.

Yep, crows are always harassing hawks and owls back home. Even the black birds.
The eagles and ospreys are engaged in ariel combat pretty often too.
But to watch and listen to  those two Terra Dactyl looking, squawkin, long legged,
broomstick necked, herons was a treat. Much more maneuverable than I ever expected.
The nesting of these birds is very, very likely as I saw one with a big stick flying by today.

Yeah, it was like watching two giraffes chasing a dingo.
