Wiggly Maple Grain
« on: November 27, 2015, 05:25:58 pm »
I'm working on this Douglas Maple that has an area that has grown over two or three knots. The wood is all sound but the grain goes everywhere. I've followed the grain with a pencil. If you were doing this how close to the pencil line would you follow? Belly side up. The picture is about 6" wide.

PS The nock is about 3" to the right of the picture

Isn't following the grain wiggle more of a thing to worry about on the back? Not belly?

I was just thinking that if I leave it more or less like it is there is no way it's going to bend there but if I follow the grain I think it may bend too much. I guess just make it bend enough.

I'm thinking the limb could end up twisting as the grain changes direction.  ???

It's out toward the tip, almost in the no bend zone, so I don't think it's going to twist enough to affect anything but what do I know?

DC, nothing wrong with following the grain for sure...That would add some beautiful character! And reduce weight also...

Follow one growth ring on the back and make the belly mimic that also with the slight taper to the tips so the limbs bend evenly and together.
