Ohio Chert
« on: September 06, 2015, 10:01:48 pm »
I located some south eastern chert in a creek bed. It is a kaki tan color after breaking the thin exterior brown cortex off. The cortex is paper thin. Anyone familiar with this rock and know if heat treating helps it?
Thanks

The chert was located in the southeastern part of Ohio, near the Ohio River. It is a soft rock but will break pretty good.

It looks like Ft. Payne or a close variation of it.

If I were you, I'd throw it into a turkey roaster and check, just out of curiosity.  It's hard to know if it will cook from a picture.

How to Cook It?  200° for 24hrs then 275° to 500° for 4hrs (depending on type), Cool for 12hr

I think that's what I'll do is heat treat it just to see. A plowed field near the creek has turned up broken points made from this rock. There is also some shinny better quality rock that is dark red and some white and red mixed that looks like flint ridge debitage.

Was hoping some Ohioians would be on here and know something about it.

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like Deleware chert, but that comes from north of Colombia up to Lake Erie
