"Gifted"
« on: June 10, 2015, 01:12:03 pm »
The tree overlooked a fine game trail. More than likely the deer actually fed on its leaves as it walked past. So it was no surprise the stand was built in its branches, and the spikes driven into its trunk...

Many years later, Clint salvaged the wood from the old deer stand tree and heard the stories from his granddad. He carefully split the trunk and set the staves aside. I was handed one of those staves and this bow still carries the stain from one of the nails driven into its trunk. The wood has already proven useful before, hopefully I can make it useful again!

This bow was cut down to 64" and carefully laid out to follow the grain.

After tillering and shooting it in, I was shocked at how hard hitting and accurate this bow was. I decided to go all the way and make this another special bow and hopefully keep it to hunt with this fall. The result is a really nice looking, fast, hunting bow. The handle is built up with Purple Heart and bocote. The tips are hippo tooth ivory from Joe, and the copperheads came from Cip. The bow pulls 55#@28" and I'm pleased with it.

My brother did the honors for me..

Thanks to my friends who have made this bow special.
God Bless!

That's a fine looking bow and a great story about the history of the wood.  Yeah, bet that will be a keeper with more stories to tell.

Another beautiful bow Scott, are those the copperhead skins you have been holding onto for a while?

Thanks guys. Sometimes, it's worth adding the little touches that take it to the next level.

Tracey, I'm sure hoping to!

Aaron, no. That set is still awaiting that perfect stave. And the extra length would have been wasted on this bow.

Great job on that bow Scott.  I'm happy to see that tree living on instead of rotting on the ground.  I hope to see a picture of it laying across a fat whitetail this fall.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left
